Survey report

Survey about the theater related habits of  educated students.

The students who filled in this survey are between 22 and 24 years old, males and females, and are in their fourth year of a five year degree in management. Therefore they accurately represent educated students. This survey has shown that this category of students do not go to the theater very often (70.7% once a month or less). However, they prepare this activity with care. None of them would think about going to the theater alone, and they always choose their movie before coming to the theater. Most students learn about the next movie they will watch over the internet (77.8% of them). It is convenient, and enables people to have different points of views and to learn about any given movie, instead of just having one point of view about some  movies. As far as the types of movie that people like, they vary from one student to another: Action movies and comedies seem to be the most successful ones (33.3 % each), but romance and science fiction ones are also very much appreciated (11.1% each). However, some argue that the type of movie is not a criteria for them, but they have other specific criterions to judge a movie before watching it. Among all students, the most serious information that will determine whether they will watch a movie or not is the synopsis; then comes what people say about the movie, and the name of the producer. The presence of famous actors is considered as somewhat important, but does not convince those students to go and watch a movie.

It can be determined from this survey that educated students choose their movies carefully: they are not the kind of people who go very regularly to the theater, just to watch their favorite actor. On the contrary, they all select their movies with care, often searching for information on the internet, and being careful to read the synopsis and to talk among themselves, to form themselves an opinion and eventually to decide which movie they will watch.

How to look for a movie

There is nothing simpler than that, as checking only two web sites is enough. First chek the web site of a big, known theater that plays most of the know new releases. Then check the web site of a small budget theater that will present most of the unknown movies which are already on screen, or will be shortly. That's it! Now that you are informed, the choice you will make to select the next movie you will watch will be less influenced by the marketing as it usualy doesn't even give you a chance to know about other movies.

The side effects of marketing in movies

The Marketing in Movies

The marketing that surrounds movies determine which movies people see, and their appreciation of those. Try to think at which movies you would come to watch at the theatre if they were all presented the same way. The previous, the posters, the communication in general about some movies hide the other ones, and determine what we watch.
Before people even hear about a movie, it has already been determined whether it could be a success or not. The selection has been made by producers, and the movies that have been chosen to be the future successes are put in the front line, right under the projectors, so that the prevision can become reality. And it works, better for some movies than for others, but it sure works. People hear about some movies months before they are on screen, and therefore, they talk about it. Soon after that, the first previous are shown, and posters appear all around. Then, people start having an opinion about the movie, whether they would like to see it or not… Not many people even hear about the small budget movies that are on screen only a few days. Their apparition on screen is often so unexpected and so quiet that they are seen just by a small number of people; who are actively choosing the movies they will watch.
This is not to say that the selection is always mistaking, and that people would always appreciate the movies that are not judged by producers as being potential success, but they do make mistakes, and this is why everyone should be careful to look for movies instead of letting the movies find them. By paying close attention to which movies are coming out, people have a chance to find attractive movies that fits their criterions, and that will entertain them, and maybe even more…
